PLT test scores are in Good Luck to Everyone:)

Time has flown and so much has gone on!!!

There has been so much that has gone on lately in the block at SUU. We have ventured to Mesquite for a week. We all had a great time and learned a lot. It was fun to play, gamble, eat, bowl and get a way.
We have also had Zinsi come with his drums and teach us how to use drums in the classroom. He was so fun, we loved the drums and his great storytelling.
We have finished up our second placement in practicum which has been either at South Elementary or Cedar Middle School. It has been a great experience.

This last week we have been real busy too. We had mock on the block interviews, where we got at taste of what interviewing for a job as a teacher would be like. We turned in our Teacher Work Samples, our practicum reports, and our Math Resource Books. We also had our last real normal classes. We will miss our great instructors. They have taught us so much.

Social Studies- Mark Marriott
Science- Dr. Genell Harris
Language Arts- Linda Marriott
Mathematics- Peggy Wittwer
Management- Peggy Wittwer
Practicum- Peggy Wittwer

Today, most of us took the PLT test. It was long and intense but just one more hole to jump through. I don't think we can all believe that it is really almost over. We only have a few finals on Tuesday this week and Science tubs at South Elementary on Wednesday and we are really DONE. It will be so exciting but also very sad, because we have become great friends and experienced so much. I hope we can all use this blog and email to keep in touch and not lose touch. Yeah!! we are almost there!!!

SUU ROTC 5 K Fun Run

There is a SUU ROTC 5K Fun Run on April 18th, which is next Saturday at SUU. It is a lot of fun. I have told some people in the block about this Run and told them that I would post a link for anyone that is interested to sign up for it. This run is for the public and helps the ROTC raise money for their program.
You get a free tshirt, snacks after the race and they also have a drawing for anyone that entered and give out free prizes afterwards even if you haven't won any part of the race. They give out free pizzas, dry cleaning, free dinners, tshirts and much more. Almost everyone gets a free giveaway after the race if they stay.
Don't feel bad if you aren't a runner, there are many that come and just support ROTC and do the walk. It is fun and free stuff.
For students it is cheaper and also cheaper if you register ahead of time so check this link out if you are interested. Go here!!!!!
Come have a fun morning and get exercise too!!!

Sage Wisdom from Fifth Graders

I had a blast in Mesquite and I fell in love with the fifth grade class that I was placed in. On Thursday afternoon I had each of them write one thing that they thought I should do in my classroom when I become a teacher. Reading through them, I decided they were way too cute not to share...so here I go...these are exactly what they said, except for some misspelled words that I fixed for this blog!

If you were a teacher I would want your kid to be respectful and I would want you to make them smart
Make your students have good handwriting
One thing I want you to do is have fun teaching your class
Do times tables and who wins gets a prize
I would want you to read to them a story about us, and be a great teacher. Don't worry you'll do great!
If the kids are good you gave them treats or food if they're good for the week
You should let your class choose where they sit every once in a while
Math
Make your students do some stories
Play the computers for 45 minutes
I think you should encourage them to work hard and try their best
A thing I would like you to do where you teach is tell them that I say you did a great job
You should teach them what bad things they shouldn't do
In your classroom you should go outside every day if they're good
Let them play kickball and four square
Give them breaks, don't be strict
To read chapter books every day to your kids
Have fun with them every day. Play a lot of fun games
In your classroom you can have fun games
Do the blue books (This is a project the fifth graders at that school have been working on all year)
Don't let your kids push you around, but be nice
Whole school year teach reading
I don't think you should do anything you'll be a great teacher
To let them get a 30 minute free time if they are good!
In your classroom you can have girls sitting by girls and boys sitting by boys
Tell them to use good manners
Every Friday play a game with them

Potato Day and Birthdays

Yesterday in Social Studies, we had Potato Day. It was quite interesting. We each had our own potatoes and had to write something that distinguish them from others and then they were taken from us. Each person then was given a description of someone's potato and they were supposed to try to get the person the right potato that was their potato. It was fun. We were given many ideas that we could do in the classroom that revolve around potatoes. We also measured ourselves with potatoes to see how tall we were in potato measurement and how big our feet were.

This would be a great idea to implement all day long. As teachers we also learned that we could do a subject all day on pretty much anything that we want and just use it in all of the subjects throughout the entire day. What a great idea.

We also have had three birthdays in the last few weeks. Laura Ward and Linda Marriott( one of our instructors) had their birthday last week. Today is Ann Van West's birthday. We hope you all have had and will have great birthdays.

See all of you after Spring Break.

Food, Visiting and Fun

Yesterday, in the block we decided to have a potluck Birthday lunch during our break from 12-1. I think everyone that was there had a great time. There was food, food and more food. We also had a big birthday cake to celebrate all of the birthdays that we don't get to celebrate while in the block. It was yummy.
We also had everyone bring baby or a picture of them as a child and then we tried to guess who each picture was. It was very hard. Some people have more of a talent at that than others. We are spending so much time together that we are starting to become family. It will be crazy when it is over and we don't see each other all the time.

Thanks to all who came, brought food, and enjoyed!!!!

We had blush blowers, feet protectors for wearing shoes, glow in the dark bowling, bubble blowers, purses, and many others. Hopefully there will be some pictures posted of this day.

Another crazy day

Yesterday we had another crazy day in the block. In Social Studies we all shared our favorite book and a little about it. We also received many other fun ideas to do with students in Social Studies when we teach.

In the afternoon, we had Science and it was a very crazy day. We had some of our groups teach lesson plans on Science. One group had us make thermometers(not real), they were used to help us get the idea of how to tell the temperature. We also actually measured the temperature of water in groups. It was fun.
In different group, we made Oobleck. It was a blast. All of us really enjoyed playing in it and making a mess. I am sure any student in elementary school would love to do this. We will all have to remember this idea and get the recipe to add to our files.
The last Science group had us make our own toothpaste. It was very interesting. I think we all learned a little more about toothpaste and what it takes to make it clean our teeth. It was very fun but some of the toothpaste definitely had something to be desired. It was fun to invent our own kind and our own flavor. I hope we have a few pictures because there was definitely some awful looking faces after trying the toothpaste.

What a fun and interesting day. Hope everyone enjoys the weekend and your new practicum assignment.

Thank You!!!

Thank you for the basket of baby stuff that you guys gave to Baby Rocklond. Everything is so cute, and it meant a lot that you guys would do something like that for me. this is a picture of Rocklond who is now a month old. He is wearing one of the outfits that you gave to him.
Thanks,
Lindsey

Social Studies Final

I know that the Social Studies Final is the last thing on our list of things to worry about right now.

However, I found this web site that helped me learn USA Geography.

The site is designed to be a game that really works like an assessment. Before it allows a player to move on to the next level the player must get a passing score.

I just thought I would mention it now so if by some miracle you have a few minutes you could squeeze in a game or two that would help with studying for the final.

Great for us as teachers

You never know when someone
May catch a dream from you
You never know when a little word
Or something you may do
May open up the windows
Of a mind that seeks the light

The way you live may not matter at all,
But you never know--- It might.

And just in case it could be
That another's life, through you,
Might possibly change for the better
It seems it might be worth a try
At pointing the way to the right
Of course, it may not matter at all,
But then again--- it might.

Free drinks

Last week was another crazy week but one thing that sticks out in our mind is Thursday morning. Mark Marriott( our Social Studies) professor told us all to follow him down to the store at the Sharwan Smith Center and he was buying us all drinks. This isn't something that happens every day and we don't just have a few in the class. He bought drinks or a treat for all 32 of us. I was impressed. I think we are all enjoying his class, and we are actually learning along with it.

Don't you all think that it would be nice if all college professors bought free drinks???? I know in the classes that I have had, I have never had any professor buy drinks for the students.
Thanks, Professor Marriott, ( Mark, Mr. Marriott). We appreciate it.

Anyone stressed out, or is it just me??

I was just wondering if anyone else is feeling overwhelmed with everything that is going on. It seems like the list gets longer and longer. I really love the practicum at South Elementary but all of our other assignments, graduation papers and credential file is getting to be a lot.

Another question???? A few of us have talked about having a pot luck lunch in the block room once a month and we can all bring something to share.
What do you all think??? If most everyone want to do it, we can pick a day and plan ahead. We could make it the same Wed. or Thurs of each month so we can plan on it. It might be fun.
